LAGOS URGES HOMEOWNERS TO EMBRACE ESTATE SUSTAINABILITY MODELS ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Lagos State Government has called on homeowners in government-owned housing estates across the state to adopt sustainability-driven practices and ensure efficient maintenance of facilities within their estates for long-term growth and value preservation.

This charge was delivered by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, during a stakeholders’ meeting with residents of Lagos State Government-owned estates in the Lagos division of the State, held at the Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri, Surulere Local Government Area.

Engr. Toriola emphasized the importance of embracing global best practices in facility management, urging residents to work closely with appointed facility managers to maintain livable, safe, and eco-friendly estates.

He noted that sustainability is a key factor in ensuring that housing estates remain attractive, resilient, and retain high market value over time.

“The Ministry’s goal is to create thriving housing estates that are not only beautiful but sustainable and resilient. This is vital in ensuring better quality of life for residents while also protecting the environment,” he stated.

The Permanent Secretary advised homeowners and facility managers to prioritize regular maintenance and comply with physical planning laws as well as environmental regulations in order to curb infrastructure decay.

He revealed that the Ministry has established a monitoring and compliance unit to enforce adherence to regulations, thereby safeguarding the long-term viability of the estates.

In addition, he urged homeowners to promptly pay their statutory estate dues, including service charges, insurance premiums, and other agreed levies, to strengthen the sustainability framework of the estates.

Highlighting the administration’s efforts in addressing housing needs, Engr. Toriola explained that the Lagos State Government is actively working to expand housing stock through the completion of ongoing projects, as well as through strategic partnerships and joint venture housing initiatives expected to deliver more homes before 2027.

To reinforce the sustainability drive, the Ministry also engaged critical state agencies, including the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Health Management Agency (Ilera Eko), LASACO Assurance, and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), all of whom made presentations on estate maintenance, safety, and environmental best practices.

The meeting, which brought together stakeholders and homeowners, was attended by representatives from Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, Ajah, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan Housing Estate, Lekki, LagosHOMS Surulere, as well as the host estate, Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri.
