In a strategic move to improve community healthcare delivery, the Lagos State Health District II (LSHD II) recently engaged traditional rulers in Ikorodu Local Government Area at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu.
The dialogue focused on strengthening the utilisation of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and enhancing public health practices across the division.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Dayo Lajide, Permanent Secretary of LSHD II, emphasised the vital role of prevention in curbing the rising burden of health challenges within the community.
She urged residents to adopt healthier lifestyles by conducting regular blood pressure checks, improving diets, and incorporating physical activity into their daily routines to lower the risks of diabetes and hypertension.
Dr. Lajide further assured community leaders of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to citizens’ well-being, noting ongoing infrastructure upgrades and provision of quality healthcare services.
She also encouraged residents to subscribe to the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme as a sustainable pathway to affordable healthcare access.
Earlier, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi set the tone for the discussions by highlighting the need for greater community participation in healthcare delivery.
He called for inclusion of priority health areas in the forthcoming state budget, stressing that community health remains a shared responsibility that requires collective action.
“Government alone cannot drive health development; all stakeholders must come together to sensitise our people on disease prevention and healthy living,” the monarch stated.
He also appealed for stronger government intervention in ensuring quality healthcare delivery.
Key priorities identified during the engagement included: Increased utilisation of PHCs within communities; Strengthened oversight and regulation of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs); Improved emergency response and steady drug provision; Sustained attention to child welfare and immunisation; Enhanced care for the elderly population; and Promotion of nutrition, physical exercise, and wellness practices.
The meeting, which was well-attended by chiefs, baales, and other community leaders, concluded with a renewed pledge of partnership between government authorities and traditional institutions.
