IKEJA ELECTRIC, LECAN EMPOWER OVER 100 YOUNG ELECTRICIANS THROUGH CAPACITY-BUILDING TRAINING ON ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND BEST PRACTICES ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), the country’s leading electricity distribution company, in collaboration with the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN), has organized an intensive one-day skill acquisition and capacity-building training themed “Electrical Safety and Best Practices in the Electricity Industry.”

This initiative marks a significant stride toward strengthening technical capacity and promoting safety consciousness in Nigeria’s power sector.

The event, held in Lagos, brought together over 100 participants, including field technicians and electrical professionals, for an engaging and practical learning experience centered on safety procedures, alternative power integration, and installation standards within the electricity industry.

Participants were exposed to real-life demonstrations and interactive sessions covering electrical safety protocols, risk management, connection hazards, and adherence to industry-compliant installation standards, as well as insights into emerging technologies shaping modern energy distribution.

Speaking during the training, Comrade Bada Waheed, State Chairman of LECAN, applauded Ikeja Electric for its consistent commitment to human capital development and industry collaboration.

“This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when industry leaders and professional bodies collaborate for sustainable growth. Our young electricians represent the future of Nigeria’s energy value chain, and programmes like this ensure they are skilled, informed, and safety-conscious.”

“We deeply appreciate this gesture from Ikeja Electric and hope for more future collaborations to impact our youth and make them more productive,” Waheed stated.

He further emphasized that the programme aligns with LECAN’s mission to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical field experience, empowering local talents for national development.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, underscored the importance of empowering frontline technicians to foster safer communities and better service delivery.

“Over time, we have discovered gaps in efficiency and knowledge acquisition, especially among technicians who are major stakeholders in our sector.”

“This informed our decision to strengthen their capacity in safety and renewable energy integration. Electricity is a powerful tool that demands precision and responsibility, and this training reinforces our zero-harm culture,” he noted.

Okotie further explained that the collaboration with LECAN is part of Ikeja Electric’s broader vision to reduce workplace accidents, enhance community safety, and promote operational excellence, while contributing to the overall well-being of the society.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Makinde Adeyinka, expressed gratitude for the initiative, describing it as “eye-opening and impactful.”

“I have learned so much about safety standards, proper installations, and how to build a sustainable career as an electrician. I am thankful to Ikeja Electric and LECAN for investing in young electricians like me and look forward to more programmes like this,” he said enthusiastically.

The one-day training forms part of Ikeja Electric’s ongoing youth empowerment and safety awareness programmes, designed to foster continuous professional development and encourage safe work practices among electrical practitioners across its service areas.
