In a renewed effort to promote safety, professionalism, and technical advancement within the power sector, Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), Nigeria’s foremost electricity distribution company, in partnership with the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN), has organized an intensive one-day skill enhancement workshop for young electricians and field technicians.
The training, themed “Electrical Safety and Best Practices in the Electricity Industry,” brought together over 100 participants from across Lagos State for a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience focused on safety procedures, renewable energy integration, and adherence to global installation standards.
Participants were exposed to modern safety protocols, risk management strategies, energy efficiency methods, and practical sessions on emerging technologies shaping Nigeria’s electricity value chain.
In his remarks, Comrade Bada Waheed, State Chairman of LECAN, applauded Ikeja Electric for its consistent investment in human capacity development within the energy sector.
“This initiative demonstrates what collaboration between industry players and professional associations can achieve in advancing technical expertise. Our young electricians are the backbone of Nigeria’s power future, and programmes like this bridge the gap between theory and practice. We appreciate Ikeja Electric’s commitment and look forward to future collaborations that will continue to empower our youth,” he stated.
Also speaking, Mr. Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, emphasized the company’s dedication to safety, innovation, and community development beyond electricity distribution.
“We identified significant knowledge and safety gaps among field technicians — critical stakeholders in the power ecosystem. This inspired our decision to strengthen their capacity, especially in renewable energy alignment, risk prevention, and safety best practices.”
“Electricity is a powerful resource that requires precision and responsibility, and this training reinforces our zero-harm culture,” Okotie explained.
“Through our collaboration with LECAN, we aim to create safer communities by empowering professionals with the right knowledge, thereby reducing accidents, preventing losses, and fostering a safer society for all,” he added.
One of the participants, Mr. Makinde Adeyinka, described the training as transformative, saying it broadened his understanding of safety protocols and professional ethics.
“This experience has been enlightening. I now have a clearer understanding of safety procedures and how to build a sustainable career in electrical services. I’m truly grateful to Ikeja Electric and LECAN for this opportunity,” he said.
The initiative forms part of Ikeja Electric’s broader youth empowerment and safety awareness agenda — a reflection of the company’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence, workplace safety, and community development.
