LAGOS LAWMAKERS SEEK IMMEDIATE BYE-ELECTIONS IN THREE LGAs OVER VACANT COUNCIL SEATS ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to mandate the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections in Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki and Somolu, following the death of three serving councillors.

The appeal was made during plenary on Thursday, as lawmakers expressed concern over the continued absence of representation in the affected wards.

Raising the matter, Hon. Prince Akinsanya Nureni, representing Mushin Constituency I, informed the House that the deaths of the councillors had left their wards without elected representatives.

He urged the Assembly to take urgent steps to ensure the vacancies are filled through fresh elections.

Corroborating the claim, Hon. Esho Kazeem of Mushin Constituency II confirmed that a councillor from his constituency had passed away and that no bye-election had been conducted to replace the deceased lawmaker.

The lawmakers collectively stressed the need for swift intervention to restore democratic representation at the grassroots level.

Adding his voice, Hon. Kehinde Joseph proposed that the Assembly formally communicate with the governor, requesting him to direct LASIEC to immediately commence the bye-election process.

He also recommended that the House observe a minute of silence in honour of the deceased councillors and extend condolence messages to their families.

Responding, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, directed members to observe a minute of silence and instructed the Clerk of the House to write officially to the governor on the matter.

The deceased councillors are:
Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor representing Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki, who died on August 13, 2025, just 17 days after her inauguration.

Zainab Shotayo, Councillor for Ward C3, Odiolowo–Ojuwoye LCDA, Mushin, who passed away on August 18, 2025, 22 days after inauguration.

Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor representing Ward F, Somolu, who died on September 21, 2025, 56 days after assuming office.

The Assembly reiterated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted representation and effective governance across all wards in the state.
