A growing wave of advocacy for equitable political representation has taken center stage in Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, as stakeholders intensify calls for the area to produce the next governor in 2027.
At the forefront of this movement is the United Area Club, an Ikorodu-based non-governmental organization described as the combination of all bases across the division.
The group, known for community mobilization and grassroots engagement, has positioned itself as a rallying platform for residents seeking greater inclusion in the political affairs of the state.
The renewed agitation reflects longstanding concerns over what many describe as the underrepresentation of Ikorodu in Lagos State’s leadership structure, despite its population strength, political loyalty, and contributions to governance over the years.

Addressing residents during a mobilization effort, the Chairman of the United Area Club, Mr. Olarewaju Olabinjo, spoke directly on the rationale behind the movement, emphasizing that the organization remains non-political in structure but committed to advocating for fairness and recognition.
He noted that recent political developments in Lagos State have further highlighted the need for Ikorodu to assert its position, stressing that the division has lagged behind others in occupying key leadership roles.
“We looked at what is happening in Lagos today, and it seems as if Ikorodu is behind and has been shortchanged. That is why we mobilized our people,” he said.
Olabinjo explained that Ikorodu had demonstrated its support for the current administration during the Renewed Hope Agenda rally, adding that the division remains aligned with ongoing governance efforts.
However, he expressed concern that the people have not been sufficiently vocal in demanding their rightful place.

“For over 30 years, Ikorodu has not held any very significant civilian political position in Lagos State. Apart from the military administrator back then, we have not produced a governor. It is our turn,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the group has embarked on extensive consultations, including engagements with traditional rulers across Ikorodu Division, who have given their blessings to the cause.
He reiterated that the advocacy is peaceful and centered on dialogue.
“We are not out to fight or abuse anybody. We are only appealing. We have met with royal majesties, and we are also meeting political leaders within and outside Ikorodu. We are consulting and lobbying to ensure that Ikorodu produces the next governor,” Olabinjo added.
Highlighting the political trajectory of other divisions, he pointed out that areas such as Epe and Lagos Island have produced governors more than once, while Badagry has also held key positions, including deputy governorship roles.
He maintained that fairness demands that Ikorodu be given the opportunity in 2027.

The group also disclosed plans to engage members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and other influential stakeholders in Lagos State as part of its ongoing consultations.
The Ayangbure of Ikorodu, His Royal Majesty Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, commended the unity and determination demonstrated by the people of the division in pursuing the cause.
“I really appreciate everyone in Ikorodu Division for this great move. As you can see, all the kings in Ikorodu Division are on this course and we are not relenting. This is the message you have brought to me, and I will deliver it to Asiwaju,” the monarch said.
Oba Shotobi affirmed his support for the agitation, describing it as a collective aspiration of the people of Ikorodu.
“I support this. Whether a man or a woman, a son or daughter of Ikorodu should be the next governor of Lagos State,” he declared.
The renewed call underscores a coordinated and sustained push by Ikorodu stakeholders, as political consultations and alignments begin to shape the landscape ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State.
