IKORODU_OGA HERITAGE ASSOCIATION COMMISSIONS STREETLIGHT PROJECT TO ENHANCE SAFETY, BOOST NIGHTTIME ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES ~ INN ∆

The Ikorodu_Oga Heritage Association has taken a significant step toward improving public safety and infrastructure with the commissioning of a streetlight project in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The commissioning ceremony, held on April 9, 2026, at the Ayangbure Palace, attracted community leaders, stakeholders, and residents, including the Vice Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Babawale Alogba, as well as the Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, who presided over the occasion.

The project involved the installation of 25 solar-powered streetlights strategically distributed across key locations within the community.

Five of the lights were installed within the palace premises, while the remaining 20 were mounted along the Suberu Ogunsanya and Banjoko Olowu axis—two critical routes that serve as alternative entry points into Ikorodu, particularly for commuters navigating from Etunwere and adjoining areas.

Speaking at the commissioning, Secretary of the Project Committee, Alhaja Adeola Rotinwa, provided detailed insight into the rationale behind the initiative.

She explained that the association embarked on a needs assessment tour across Ikorodu Division, engaging residents and observing firsthand the challenges faced by the community.

According to her, one of the most pressing issues identified was the persistent darkness along the roads at night.

She noted that despite its importance as a  route into Ikorodu, the area remained largely unlit, making it unsafe and inconvenient for road users.

Rotinwa stated that the association was deliberate in choosing a project that would have a direct and wide-reaching impact on the community.

“We discovered that at night, the area is always very dark, especially for those coming into Ikorodu through Etunwere to Banjoko Olowu. This is an entry route, and it is not safe to leave it in darkness. That is why we deemed it necessary to provide light,” she said.

She further emphasized that the project goes beyond infrastructure, describing it as a contribution to the overall well-being and security of residents.

Rotinwa also used the opportunity to call on other community-based associations and organizations to adopt a more people-centered approach to development.

She advised that groups should conduct proper assessments before embarking on projects to ensure that their initiatives align with the actual needs of the people.

“Some associations execute projects that do not directly impact the community. We must go around, identify real needs, and carry out projects that benefit everyone. Even if we do not live in those areas, we should be selfless in serving our communities,” she added.

Also speaking at the event, Treasurer of the association, Alhaji Omidina Wasiu, highlighted the strategic importance of the project location.

He explained that the Suberu Ogunsanya and Banjoko Olowu corridor is frequently used by motorists seeking to bypass the often-congested Ikorodu roundabout and garage.

He stressed that providing illumination along this route not only improves safety but also enhances traffic flow by encouraging more road users to utilize the alternative path, especially at night.

He further disclosed that the project required a substantial financial commitment, running into millions of naira, reflecting the association’s dedication to meaningful community development.

HRM Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi commended the Ikorodu Oga Heritage Association for its foresight, unity, and commitment to addressing  community needs.

He noted that the choice of solar-powered streetlights was particularly commendable, given the ongoing challenges associated with electricity supply in Nigeria.

The monarch emphasized that access to light remains a fundamental necessity for development, security, and improved quality of life.

“Light is one of the major challenges we face in Nigeria. What this association has done by installing solar-powered lights is highly commendable. It shows foresight and a deep understanding of the community’s needs,” he stated.

Oba Shotobi further expressed his appreciation to the association, noting that despite being relatively young, it has demonstrated a strong commitment to impactful service.

He praised the group for making meaningful contributions within a short period and for working harmoniously with traditional institutions.

The initiative by the Ikorodu Oga Heritage Association stands as a clear example of how community-driven efforts can complement government interventions, fostering safer and more livable environments across Ikorodu and beyond.
