The church’s role as outlined in the Holy Bible is not just concentrated on the spiritual well-being of the people in the community alone but all round wellness encompasses social, physical and psychological well-being.
Some of the roles of faith-based organizations in the prevention of substance use that were covered in this write include the creation of public awareness, community mobilization, counselling and rehabilitation services, and conducting mentorship programmes.
The use of religion and spiritual intervention in preventing and treating substance abuse has been well-established across the world (Wallace, Myers & Osai, 2015). The possible ways religion may influence substance use and recovery include establishing evidence-based intervention, providing opportunities to acquire learned competencies, and providing social and organizational relationships.
Thus, faith-based organizations can work in partnership with other organizations to prevent drug and substance abuse in their various communities.
Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs. Its prevalence and trends have been on increasing.
The world's total population is aged 15-64 years abusing drugs and substances annually (United Nations Office on Drug and Crime, 2018).
Role of FBOs in this year's Theme: People First, Stop the Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.
Community Mobilization to Stop the Stigma and Discrimination.
Promoting Counseling Services and Rehabilitation.
Organize capacity building for Youths to strengthen prevention. Public awareness of the Nexus between Substance Abuse and HIV/ Hepatitis.
Mentorship and leadership model. COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION: Faith-Based Organizations should focus on strengthening collaborations for prevention intervention at all levels.
Expanding local resources, and building capacity to provide substance abuse prevention, treatment, and mental health services, as well as program management.
Community Collaboration and Fund Raising:
Faith-Based Organizations should also expand their capacity when tackling drug and substance abuse problems among young people by partnering more with other sectors.
For instance, FBOs can appeal for funds to train and training of her members. COST EFFECTIVENESS OF PREVENTION FOR FBOS: Prevention is also a wise financial investment. Further, it is far more cost-effective to prevent people from ever coming down with drug addiction than it is to treat them when they've come down with a problem. In order words prevention is safer, cheaper and beneficial and cost-effective than treatment. STOPPING THE STIGMA BY FBOS: However, stigmas and stereotypes still prevent many Nigerians from openly discussing drugs, and prevention only has broad workability when everyone participates in it. With this in mind, prevention cannot just be a public health policy initiative only but rather a collective effort. It should be FBOs initiative to start this among members by promoting the choice of languages and preventing acts of discrimination towards people who use drugs (PWUD) and those with substance use disorder (SUD). FBs event self-denial among members and parental denial because of stigma. FBOS COLLABORATION IN DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION AND HIV/HEPATITIS: FBOs should also expand their capacity when tackling drug and substance use problems by addressing the issue of HIV/ HEPATITIS among those who use injectable drugs.
In achieving this they need to strengthen collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of ADIS (NACA) SACA and LACA.
A government organization coordinating HIV activities in Nigeria at the National, State and Local government levels CREATION OF COUNSELLING SERVICES: Faith-based organizations need to play a key role in reducing the burden of drug abuse across the world through counselling and rehabilitation programmes.
Church leaders need to take a role in counselling societies is key in substance use prevention, and treatment. Providing a safe place for people who prodrugs or substances to talk without discrimination.
Making Public Awareness as Part of Their Evangelism: FOBs should make awareness against illicit drugs part of their evangelism. In their respective religious denominations, jointly taking awareness in youth groups and schools. Supporting victims of Substance Use Disorder in treatment, and rehabilitation to aid the recovery process and reintegration back into society. CONDUCTING MENTORSHIP PROGRAMMES, TRAINING AND RETRAINING OF MEMBERS: Mentoring consists of matching an experienced adult follower of Christ with youths and young adults. Mentoring is an old Christian practice based on Apostle Paul’s relationship with Timothy. Engaging mentorship including parents and teachers in parental care and proper upbringing of children. Therefore, It fits perfectly for mature followers of Jesus Christ to promote a united drug-free lifestyle, healthy living and all-rounder Wellness Socially, Physically, Psychologically and Spiritually since health is a continuum. OPPORTUNITIES FOR FBOS IN SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION SERVICES: Receive training and retraining in universal substance use prevention, treatment and recovery through the International Society of Substance Use Professionals at home and abroad. Become a certified Prevention Professional, Treatment Specialist and Recovery Coach or Allies. Be well equipped with knowledge in Evidence-Based Practices in prevention, treatment and recovery. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, there are a variety of opportunities for faith-based organizations in substance use prevention from a Christian perspective.
Based on this year's theme, the FBOs stand a chance to do more in helping youth and young adults to discard the habit of drug and substance use.
Furthermore, the FBOs and other interested partners may adopt some of the theme points, People First, stop stigma and discrimination to do more in touching the lives of young people, especially those affected by alcohol and substance use disorder. RECOMMENDATION: FBOs should promote youth mentorship programmes to empower the young economically.
FBOs discourage negative behaviours, name callings, and unhealthy language through the promotion of religious values that improve hope among those Who Use Drugs (WUD). #MAINTAIN A SOUND MIND IN A SOUND BODY.

89ouugjjo8113317836722219486 The 2nd Edition of the Nigeria Children Arts and Cultural Festival (NACAF) was held on Children's Day May 29th 2023.
The event took place at Ikorodu Musical Village along Oke Ota-Ona Road, with students from schools across Lagos State gracing the auspicious occasion.
Despite the windy and rainy day, the venue was packed to its brim with students representing their academy with varieties of unique attire.
The event was organised by Lagos's foremost Art collection centre, Oshodi Arts Gallery (based in Ikorodu).
Television Drama/comedy legend, Abiodun Ayoyinka aka Papa Ajasco took students by surprise, making his presence felt to commemorate the children.
Executive Chairman of Ijede LCDA, Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, Represented by the Vice-Chairman, Hon. Femi Kareem guided the students on effective ways to use social media, while the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba was also present to engage the pupils on Law and Order.
The program also featured top-ranking representatives from the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Nigerian Fire Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Legion, taking turns to orientate students on topics like; Child Abuse, Child Security Tips, Domestic Fire Emergency Response, Avoiding Peer Pressures and more. Addressing guests and schools to the occasion, Dr Oshodi Seyi Paul, CEO of Oshodi Arts Gallery, underscored the essence of the Nigeria Children and Arts Cultural Festival (NACAF), as an event, positioned to celebrate students across Lagos State and Nigeria in general.
In 2022, the 1st edition was a 2-day event, held at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) in Ikorodu, but according to Dr Oshodi Paul, the 2nd edition was shifted to Ikorodu Musical Village for a one-day spectacle, due to its growing popularity and volume of participating schools.
He explained further, "We have discovered that children crave to celebrate their intellectual growth, capacity and creativity, that's why NACAF is digging into their numerous gifts to applaud them annually".
"Children are the pride of every Nation, and NACAF, to uncover the hidden potentials of our future leaders is poised to unveil the skillset and proficiency of our children, through Arts and Creativity".
"Despite the cold weather and heavy downpour, our schools did not flinch to come out for this celebration, that is why I want to sincerely thank all school students and administrators in attendance today, for making this second edition a successful one" Dr Oshodi asserted.
Cultural dance and contemporary demonstration were on full display, showcased at the event, culminating with special games which attracted cash gifts to the learners. The high point of the event was a special Match parade as schools exemplified their banners and saluted dignitaries.
In all, Over 33 schools attended the memorable event, which was well received by parents who were also in attendance.
Schools include; Comfortville School, Diagold School, Netta first school, Shallenville School, Vast treasure school, Samflo School, Chris will school, Majority choice school, Lograc School, Laplu belle seed school, Standard Foundation, Decent comprehensive school, Top Success, K success, White hall school, and Saphir private school.
Also; Crown best school, Raodah School, Uncle bayus school, The great path school, Silver ray school, Matpav shinning school, Ever great school, Debarms School, Leading child school, Unique Prella, Crown success school, Great square school, Divine gold school, Fransreb school, Dolafied school and Mercylad school, all attended the program.
A certificate of Participation was subsequently presented to all institutes in attendance.

In a build up to the 31st edition of Ikorodu Oga Day celebration, Ikorodu Oga development association (IKODASS) spearheaded a fitness walk on the 29th of October 2022.
The health-oriented walk which kicked off from Ikorodu ultra-modern town hall in the early hours of the day was initiated to crusade against drug abuse by youths in recent times.
Discerning drug abuse as a catalyst for promoting social vices across society, the association came out in mass, chaperoned by various youths and private organisations in the waterbed region to sensitise the general public on the dangers of harming medications.
The walk essentially draws teenagers and youths into channeling their lifestyle on grabbing opportunities of showcasing their talents through pitching of ideas and pursuing reasonable empowerment.
With Mr Rotimi Erogbogbo, chairman, IKODASS leading the campaign, the walk routed through Ita-Elewa, to the ancient African Methodist church, coming through Ota-Ona and sprinted to Ikorodu roundabout before resting at the palace of HRM, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, Ayangburen of Ikorodu Kingdom. With credit to youth coordinator and fitness expert, Comrade Odufeko Tolulope Emmanuel 'Pukka', the fitness walk displayed demanding workout with a mix of dance and recreation, uniquely fascinating residents in Ikorodu central.
Speaking to the press, His Royal Majesty, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, post-walk, stated that Ikorodu, prevailing as the 12th largest city in Nigeria, has come of age and must attract every form of positivity to the soil for purpose of growth and expansion.
The King, thanking everyone for joining the crusade against drug abuse, urged youths to take their future into their hands by staying away from every form of negative influence.
“This is my 7th year on the throne, and even before becoming the paramount ruler of Ikorodu kingdom, I’ve been an integral part of Ikorodu Oga development association”.

Skuchies' is a cocktail of drugs, including cannabis sativa, tramadol tablets, codeine, swifnol, among others.
The trio- Francis Friday, Kemi Adeyemo, and Nonso Orji - were arrested while conveying 150 bottles of skuchies' in a Suzuki minibus at Igbo Agowa, Ikorodu.
The command's Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known in a tweet on Tuesday.
According to him, suspicion and a subsequent search led to the arrest of the syndicate.
Advising Nigerians to avoid drugs, Hundeyin revealed that investigation was ongoing in the case.
He tweeted, "It started with reasonable suspicion, then search. Francis Friday m' aged 30; Kemi Adeyemo f aged 35 years; and Nonso Orji 'm' aged 22, were arrested while conveying 150 bottles of skuchies in a Suzuki minibus at Igbo Agowa, Ikorodu".

The dedicated team behind the event has already secured a significant quantity of essential supplies, including one thousand bags of Garri, 30 thousand bags of soaps, 24 thousand printed exercise books, 10 thousand buckets, 10 thousand bags of salt, 10 thousand bags of sugar, and two solid generators, one of which is a 350kVA powerhouse. The crusade team has convened with 320 pastors on the ground to ensure the event's effectiveness, highlighting the spirit of unity and purpose.
