
In a concerted effort to curb the spread of cholera in Lagos State, the government has embarked on a vigorous awareness campaign targeting community leaders, members of Community Development Associations (CDAs), and all residents.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of embracing hygienic practices to combat the deadly disease.
Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, highlighted the urgency of the situation during an interactive session with community leaders and CDAs on the 2nd of July 2024.
He implored attendees to ensure that the dialogue translates into actionable steps to prevent cholera outbreaks. Dr. Agbaje emphasized that this meeting forms part of the state’s broader intervention measures to mitigate the spread of cholera.
“We commend Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing a platform for Community Development Associations to engage with the state on critical issues affecting our communities.”
“This interactive session is a strategic move to enlighten community members on preventing cholera, a disease that poses a significant health threat,” Dr. Agbaje stated.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, in her welcome address, underscored the importance of the session. She urged participants to disseminate information on hygiene and cholera prevention effectively.
“Ensuring that our communities are well-informed about proper hygiene practices is crucial in our fight against cholera,” she remarked.
Alhaji Azeez Amusat, Chairman of the Lagos State Community Development Advisory Council (LSCDAC), expressed his gratitude to the Governor and the Ministry for involving CDAs in the state’s development agenda.
“We are committed to ensuring that our communities are sensitized on preventing cholera. This collaborative effort is vital for the health and well-being of our residents,” he said.
During the technical session, Mr. Olusegun Badejo, Director of Health Promotions from the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of adhering to health guidelines issued by the state government.
He also discussed first-aid measures that can be administered to cholera patients to improve their recovery rates. “Effective first-aid treatment can significantly enhance the outcomes of medical interventions,” Mr. Badejo noted.
Mrs. Olabisi Shonabire, Director of Laboratory Services at LASEPA, spoke extensively on cholera preventive measures. She reiterated the necessity of proper hand-washing, water distillation, and maintaining hygiene.
“The simplest yet most effective way to support the state’s efforts in combating cholera is by ensuring that we practice proper hygiene daily,” she advised.
The interactive session concluded with a call to action for all community leaders and CDA members to actively participate in spreading awareness and implementing preventive measures within their communities.
