iCare Foundation, established by Ikorodu federal lawmaker, Rep. Babajimi Benson, in collaboration with Focus Teens Foundation, launched a Summer Career Program for teenagers and youth on monday, 29th of July 2024.
Titled “Youth: The Ultimate Asset,” the program aims to inspire students from JSS3 to SS3 to prioritize their career paths and fully utilize their youthful potential.
The event, which attracted 150 participants from public secondary schools across Ikorodu Division, provided by Education District II, took place in Ikeja.
A virtual session was also conducted at Oriwu College, Ikorodu, where a reporter from Ikorodu News Network was present, and over 80 students joined online.
The initiative aligns with iCare Foundation’s goal to create opportunities and offer resources that promote sustainable development and social inclusion.
Key attendees included Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development; Mr. Ogini Odini; Mrs. Kareema Kazeem; Mr. Olaonipekun Kazeem, Founder of Focus Teens Foundation; HRM Oba Adeyeye Enitan; HRM Oba Adedeji Adebanjo of Asanya Ile-Ife, representing the Ooni of Ife; and Mrs. Abimbola Odubako, representing Lagos State First Lady Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
The event also featured participation from Education District 6 and other notable dignitaries.
Mr. Olaonipekun Kazeem, founder of the Focus Teens Foundation, welcomed attendees by stressing the significance of their involvement. He acknowledged the disparities faced by students in public schools compared to their private school counterparts.
“While private schools offer numerous advantages, these are often inaccessible to students in public schools,” Mr. Kazeem noted.
He emphasized that the program was designed to support public school students specifically due to their challenges with access to technology and reliable power.
The initiative sought to bridge the gap between public and private school students, ensuring equal access to valuable knowledge and experiences.
“Our goal is to provide you with a framework of information so that you can learn from any challenges you encounter and build upon them,” he advised.
He concluded by encouraging students to take full advantage of the opportunities offered and to recognize their potential.
Hon. Commissioner Ogunlende Mobolaji underlined the necessity of active participation and attentiveness throughout the program.
He stated, “Over the next few days, all we ask is that you stay engaged. If you are not paying attention, it means we have all come here for no reason, and we do not want that.”
Commissioner Ogunlende expressed his belief in the youth’s potential, stating, “We have faith in your abilities. You are the leaders of tomorrow, starting today, which is why we are all here. We must nurture you early on to develop into responsible citizens of Lagos and Nigeria.”
Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Abimbola Odubako delivered a speech emphasizing the program’s role in shaping young individuals’ futures.
She pointed out that the program is especially valuable during the vacation period, offering essential guidance and direction.
“To all participants, this program marks the start of a journey full of potential,” Mrs. Odubako said. “You are filled with hopes and dreams for a better future. This program is intended to serve as a stepping stone in your career, equipping you with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to pursue your goals with determination.”
Mrs. Odubako urged participants to actively engage, ask questions, seek guidance, and learn from the professionals present.
In closing, she reminded students that their future is shaped by their choices and efforts. “Your decisions, efforts, and attitudes will define your destiny. Be proactive, innovative, and dedicated in shaping the world.”
She thanked the iCare Foundation and Focus Teens Foundation for organizing the program and applauded their contribution to the development of young people.
“To all the students, I wish you success on this journey. May you leave here more inspired and determined to achieve your dreams,” Mrs. Odubako concluded.
Dr. Sherifat Yusuf, Tutor General and Permanent Secretary of Education District 6, emphasized that the event, with its theme “Youth: The Ultimate Asset,” aimed to offer guidance and expose young people to various career paths.
Dr. Yusuf detailed the importance of career guidance and exploration of diverse occupations. She noted that choosing a career is a complex process that requires careful consideration and broad exposure.
She expressed confidence that the five-day program would help students clarify their career goals. While many students aspire to traditional professions like medicine, law, or accounting, she noted the growing relevance of emerging fields such as content creation. She cited the success of TikTok creators as an example of how young people can utilize their talents in innovative ways.
Dr. Yusuf encouraged students to apply what they have learned and share their knowledge with peers who could not attend. “When you return to school, use everything you’ve learned here. Share this knowledge with those who missed out. You have a valuable opportunity, and it’s crucial to pass it on,” she concluded.
The program also featured breakout sessions where students discussed topics like entrepreneurship, academic success, mental health, and community service.
Expert facilitators offered insights and practical advice, leaving students inspired and motivated.
Adebayo Oluwaseun, a participant, shared his reflections on the event: “This program has broadened my perspective on the opportunities ahead. I am thankful to iCare Foundation and Focus Teens Foundation for their investment in our future. I feel more empowered to pursue my goals,” he said.
The partnership between iCare Foundation and Focus Teens Foundation demonstrates a strong commitment to youth development in Ikorodu Division.
Students left with renewed enthusiasm and a sense of purpose, ready to harness their youth as a powerful asset in their journey to success.
