On Thursday, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, distributed over 1,200 free bags of Urea fertilizer to farmers across the district.
The distribution is part of his continued efforts to support agriculture in the region and enhance food production.
The initiative follows closely on the heels of a similar exercise two months ago when Senator Abiru facilitated the distribution of fertilizers provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
This earlier effort was aimed at boosting food security and addressing the challenges faced by farmers in increasing productivity.
Speaking at the recent event, Senator Abiru, represented by his Media Aide, Mr. Enitan Olukotun, highlighted the importance of this fertilizer distribution in complementing the federal government’s Renewed Hope agenda, particularly its focus on food security.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating hunger and ensuring farmers are equipped with the necessary tools to thrive.
Senator Abiru’s consistent support for the agricultural sector has been demonstrated through various programs aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods.
These include the distribution of essential farm inputs such as fertilizers, seedlings, and herbicides to over 300 crop farmers.
In addition, over 100 poultry farmers have benefitted from the provision of fully vaccinated chickens, feed, and cages to help boost livestock farming in the district.
Dr. Hakeem Adetugbobo, who coordinates agricultural empowerment initiatives for Senator Abiru, commended the Senator’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of farmers.
He pointed out that the district is witnessing a gradual shift from subsistence to mechanized farming, largely due to the Senator’s interventions.
“We should be grateful to Senator Abiru for his relentless efforts in ensuring our farmers are well taken care of,” Dr. Adetugbobo remarked.
Beyond the distribution of fertilizers and farm inputs, Dr. Adetugbobo revealed that Senator Abiru has facilitated the establishment of farmers’ cooperatives within Lagos East Senatorial District.
These cooperatives serve as a platform for farmers to access funding and other resources critical to their business operations, further strengthening the agricultural sector in the district.
Several beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the support they received. Alhaja Onifade Muslimot, a farmer from Igbogbo Bayeku LCDA, noted that Senator Abiru’s assistance has enabled farmers to take greater pride in their profession.
Mrs. Blessing Nwaezawa and Mr. Dauda Taiwo, both beneficiaries, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the fertilizers would significantly improve their crop yields and overall productivity.
The event was attended by prominent community leaders, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and key stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
Among those present were Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, Arc Taiwo Kara, Deaconess Wonu Osinowo (APC Lagos East Women Leader), Alhaji Jimoh Tijani, Hon. Princess Adebimpe Akinsola, Alhaji Shehu Usman Sampam, Alhaji Rilwan Ishola Jinadu, Alhaji Sulaimon Musiliu, Bishop Olajide Odusoga, and Otunba (Dr.) Femi Oke, the Southwest Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), represented by Mrs. Adeola Adewunmi-Malik.
With this initiative, Senator Abiru continues to demonstrate his commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector in Lagos East, a crucial step toward achieving sustainable food security for the region.
