Today, the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Igbogbo Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in partnership with the Council, organized a significant advocacy program on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The event focused on empowering and educating young girls to recognize and resist domestic abuse, showcasing the LCDA’s dedication to building a safer, more informed community for women and girls.
To amplify the message, the Executive Management, Legislators, and staff of Igbogbo Bayeku LCDA led an awareness rally throughout key areas of Igbogbo.
The rally aimed to sensitize residents about the impact of gender-based violence and encourage a proactive stance on prevention and victim support.
Several experts spoke during the program, sharing insights on both the challenges and strategies for preventing gender-based violence.
The first speaker, Mrs. Foluke Daramola highlighted practical safety measures, emphasizing the importance of listening to one’s instincts.
“You can prevent sexual abuse by trusting your instinct and avoiding being alone at night or in dark places,” she advised, urging young girls to stay alert.
Mrs. Abike Okin, the second speaker, discussed essential “alert types” for recognizing gender abuse, including “food alert, touch alert, and gift alert.”
She advised young girls to stay vigilant, warning against manipulative actions often used to exploit them.
Hon. Princess Basirat Banjoko encouraged the girls to value themselves and remain confident.
“Always have confidence in yourself as a girl,” she said, adding, “Do not limit yourself; identify your core values.”
Her words underscored the importance of self-confidence in tackling societal pressures.
The final speaker, Mrs. Dolapo Abosede, Medical Officer of Health for Igbogbo, addressed the health implications of early sexual activities, promoting abstinence and educating on the risks associated with sexual engagement at a young age.
The program wrapped up with a question-and-answer session, where the girls expressed gratitude to the CDC and the executive chairman of Igbogbo Bayeku LCDA for organizing such an informative and empowering event.
