Ijagun, Ogun State – The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University, marking a significant milestone in the country’s higher education sector.
The announcement was made on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised university of education. It was named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a renowned activist and founder of Mayflower School in Ikenne.
With its well-developed infrastructure and academic excellence, TASUED’s transition into a federal institution requires minimal financial input from the Federal Government.
The university also becomes the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District.
On Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally approved the adoption, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for allowing the Federal Government to take over one of the state’s premier educational assets.
“This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating young Nigerians and instilling patriotism and leadership values,” President Tinubu stated.
He also acknowledged the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, for his pivotal role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.
With TASUED’s federal status, the Federal Government now directly oversees three education-focused universities: Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ogun State; Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo.
The President emphasized that this transition is a strategic move aimed at strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of instruction at all levels of the Nigerian educational system.
TASUED’s transformation into a Federal University of Education not only enhances Ogun State’s educational landscape but also aligns with the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality teacher training across the country.
