LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent accumulation of refuse in some communities and public spaces.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the governor assured residents that the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources have intensified efforts to address the situation and restore cleanliness across affected areas.

According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, additional trucks and personnel have been deployed to accelerate the evacuation of waste backlogs, with sanitation agencies working round the clock to ensure prompt clearance of refuse from impacted neighbourhoods.

He noted that residents should already be witnessing improvements in several parts of the state, stressing that the government remains committed to sustaining the clean-up exercise until Lagos is completely free of the current waste accumulation challenge.

The governor highlighted the enormous responsibility involved in managing waste in the state, revealing that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tons of waste daily. He emphasized that addressing the challenge requires coordinated efforts and significant resources, adding that his administration is fully determined to resolve the situation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also appealed to residents to support the government’s sanitation drive by properly bagging their waste and refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, road medians, and other unauthorized locations.

Reassuring Lagosians of the government’s commitment, the governor stated that relevant agencies are fully on top of the situation and will continue to implement measures aimed at maintaining a clean, healthy, and environmentally sustainable state.

He urged residents to collaborate with government efforts, emphasizing that collective responsibility remains essential in keeping Lagos clean and safe for all.
