Sesan Daini, who also doubles as the grand patron of the 57 Lagos councils CPS en route to oshogbo was duly represented by his vice-chairman, Hon. Nuraini Okedina-Maja.
Furthermore, the gathering also brought in Ikorodu’s legal practitioner and political adviser, Mr SOK shillings to orientate the public relations experts on carving out a better niche for themselves as PRs to council bosses.
In his opening remark, Hon. Nuraini Okedina-Maja, speaking on behalf of the executive chairman, advised the 57 CPS to be the effective voice of their respective local government.
Hon. Nuraini proceeded, “To this day, there are still a lot of people who do not yet comprehend what the local government is all about, CPS must enlighten the population because there are a lot of elements to talk about in the council”.
“Whatever information is given out by the council press secretary is what the general public consumes and perceives as the framework of the government which also embodies the purpose of that administration”.
Mr Okedina-Maja asserted that adequate representation of governance by the chief press secretary at the grassroots degree doesn’t only evaluates the cogency of an administration at the council level, it also notifies well at the State hierarchy.
“The Local government and LCDA’s is very near to the people which enables a lot of undertakings to be accomplished, and with the right information propagation by the CPS, it becomes a total package”.
Hon. Okedina-Maja in closing, advised the CPS of their use of words as the mouthpiece of the council, urging them to deliver positivity at all times.
“There is the saying that, ‘It’s not about what you say, but what you do’, but in the world of Chief Press Secretaries, it centres around what you say”.
“It is what you say as the CPS, that can either bring people closer to the government or keep them away from the system. You put light and hope to the performance of your councils, so it is very important that as a CPS, you polish your tone and stay positive at all times” Hon. Okedina-Maja surmised
In a follow-up charge, Mr SOK shillings wasted no time in pointing out the responsibilities of a credible CPS, calling the PRs attention to their true essence.
“Most times, the need of a region is far larger than the capacity of the local government, but in that case, the CPS must calm the urge of the community, in the process compelling the council to do something about the situation”.
“Even in cases where the council solicits support from the State, the CPS must always help the council as an intermediary to the grassroots in buying time and exercising patience”.
“This is why as CPS, the room for continuous learning doesn’t end because the needs of the community are insatiable. Knowing the functions of every department in the council is a must and a plus to the knowledge base of all press secretaries, simply because it always gives them information to disseminate to the general public”.
Mr SOK shillings notified the 57 CPS that they perform a dual role of merging the performance of the local, state and federal governments, adding that good work is about perception.
He continued, “It is not how well you’ve performed, but how well people received your performance. Yes!, you cannot satisfy everybody, but you should be able to decipher the people’s reactions and amplify the positive ratings”.
“Every time you see the good works of your government, look around, you must let the people know about it constantly”. Mr SOK shillings added
In the aftermath of the brief orientation, Mr Ayodele Ayeyemi thanked the Executive Chairman of Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA for always supporting the 57 council CPS in Lagos State, extending his profound appreciation to Mr SOK shillings for unlocking the eyes of his colleagues to areas where they must have ignored in the course of discharging their duties.
