The Lagos State Government has approved the release of ₦799,840,120 as insurance benefits to the next of kin of 148 deceased employees of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and various Local Government Councils, reaffirming its commitment to worker welfare and post-service support.
The payment, described as the first tranche of insurance settlements for 2026, was sanctioned under the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

Speaking at the official presentation ceremony held in the Conference Room of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development on June 11, 2026, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, commended the Governor for maintaining a consistent record of prioritising the welfare and entitlements of public servants, both in service and posthumously.
He noted that the initiative reflects the state government’s ongoing responsibility to support families left behind by deceased workers.
Dr. Agbaje revealed that the Lagos State Government has paid out more than ₦5 billion in insurance claims to families of deceased SUBEB and Local Government staff since 2017.

According to him, the scheme continues to provide financial relief to bereaved families and helps reduce the economic hardship that often follows the loss of a breadwinner.
He also acknowledged the roles of LASACO Assurance Plc and Haggai Insurance Brokers Limited for their cooperation in ensuring smooth and timely processing of claims.
While extending condolences to the affected families, Dr. Agbaje prayed for strength and comfort for the beneficiaries, urging them to channel the funds responsibly toward the upbringing, education, and general welfare of the dependants left behind.
He further advised Desk Officers handling documentation to maintain strict professionalism, stressing the importance of accurate verification of documents such as death certificates to prevent delays in payment processing.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, represented by the Director of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Margaret Adegelu, reiterated the administration’s commitment to the welfare of public sector workers.
She noted that the deceased workers contributed significantly to the development of Lagos State and urged beneficiaries to invest the funds prudently to preserve their legacies.
Stakeholders Commend Payment Process
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of key stakeholders, including the Chairman of SUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu (represented by Mrs. Taibat Olona), alongside representatives of LASACO Assurance Plc and Haggai Insurance Brokers Limited.

They all praised the Lagos State Government for sustaining the insurance scheme and ensuring regular payment of benefits, while encouraging beneficiaries to manage the funds responsibly for long-term family stability.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Promise Ekere Nnamadi expressed appreciation to the state government for honouring the memory of the deceased through timely payment of entitlements.
He assured that the funds would be used judiciously to support families and uphold the legacies of the departed workers.
