Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed that the Lagos Red Line Rail is set to transport more than 500,000 passengers daily upon full operation, positioning it as a major pillar in the state’s evolving transport network.
Speaking with State House correspondents at Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday, the governor highlighted that the state recently secured 24 new train coaches from China to strengthen operations on the Red Line corridor.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the introduction of the new rolling stock is expected to significantly improve commuter mobility while easing pressure on existing transport systems across the state.
He added that discussions are underway to extend the rail line beyond Lagos into neighbouring Ogun State, a move aimed at accommodating the growing number of inter-state commuters.
According to the governor, the Red Line will operate eight-coach trains—double the capacity of the four-coach configuration currently deployed on the Lagos Blue Line Rail.
The expanded capacity is designed to support the 27-kilometre stretch linking Oyingbo to Agbado, with projections of up to 37 trips daily.
He further noted that the rail project is part of a broader multimodal transport strategy that integrates road, rail, and water transportation systems to improve connectivity and drive economic growth.
On water transport, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the Omi-Eko initiative is progressing, with plans to introduce high-capacity electric ferries by 2027 to enhance operations across Lagos waterways.
The governor emphasized that the coordinated development of transport infrastructure would not only ease movement within the state but also stimulate productivity and increase internally generated revenue.
“The Red Line represents a significant upgrade in capacity compared to the Blue Line. With eight coaches per train, it is designed to move up to 500,000 passengers daily along the Agbado–Oyingbo corridor,” he said.
He added that similar investments previously made in the Blue Line are being replicated on the Red Line to ensure consistency and long-term sustainability of Lagos State’s rail infrastructure.
